Ingredients
- 1 cup Horse Gram Dal (Kollu/ Kulith) , soaked for 8 hours
- 1 Pearl onions (Sambar Onions) , finely chopped
- 2 Green Chillies , finely chopped
- 1/4 cup Fresh coconut , grated
- 1 tablespoon Sesame (Gingelly) Oil
- 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds (Rai/ Kadugu)
- 2 teaspoons White Urad Dal (Split)
- 1 sprig Curry leaves , finely chopped
- Coriander (Dhania) Leaves , small bunch, finely chopped
- Salt , to taste
How to make Huruli Sundal Recipe - Kollu / Horse Gram Sundal Recipe
To prepare the Huruli Usili / Kollu Sundal/ Horse Gram Sundal recipe, ensure that the horse gram is soaked overnight in enough water. The next day, pressure cook it again for about 5-6 whistles in 2 cups of water. Since the horse gram is very firm, it takes longer to soften.
Once done, drain any excess water from the cooked horse gram and keep it aside. You can use the water in gravies and curries or even for cooking rice.
Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan on medium heat; add in the mustard seeds and urad dal. Allow them to crackle and the urad dal to roast until it turns golden brown and crisp.
Add in the chopped onions, green chillies and curry leaves. Saute in medium heat until the onions are softened and turn slightly golden.
Finally stir in the cooked horse gram and coconut. Check the salt and adjust according to taste. Stir fry for a couple of minutes and turn off the heat.
Transfer the Huruli Sundal to as serving bowl and serve hot.
Serve the Huruli Sundal / Kollu Sundal/ Horse gram Sundal as a tea time snack or as salad along with your meals.
