Health Benefits of Rasna (Alpinia Galanga) - Ayurvedic Medicinal Plant

Rasna also known as Alpinia Galanga is an Ayurvedic Medicinal which is a rhizome grown in most of Southeast Asia and is used in cooking and home made remedies. This rasna tea is made with boiling rasna roots and leaves and peppercorn and then adding some honey for sweetness.

This recipe of Rasna, Ayurvedic Medicinal Plant Tea is really simple. You need to take a few roots and a few leaves and boil them in enough water with peppercorns till the water reduces to half the quantity.  You can add other ingredients like, jeera or cinnamon  or cloves in the tea if you like. We have sweetened the tea with honey but adding honey is completely optional.

Rasna plant is used in many Ayurvedic medicines in India, Tibet, Africa to help with inflammation, bronchitis, asthma, cough, indigestion, piles, joint pains,obesity, diabetes. The paste of the leaf is also applied externally to reduce swelling.

There are many varieties of rasna available throughout India. If you do not find the fresh roots you can also buy the powdered rasna roots.  

Below is the Rasana or Alpinia Galanga plant. The leaves are absolutely flavorful and have a very sharp smell too.

Every part of the rasna plant is medicinal and has a lot of health benefits.

You can dry the roots and make them into a powder. Use the root to make chutneys and even thai curry pastes.

Use can use the leaf of the rasna, my adding it to flavour curries, make herbal tea like the recipe below and even make a paste combined with essential ayurvedic oils that is used for body pains etc.

  • It is believed that the Rasma tea decoction or when had in powder form, acts as a blood purifier.  
  • The paste made from the rasna plant including the leaves, can be used to relieve joint pains
  • A tea decoction like the one made in the recipe below, helps in a lot of respiratory ailments like cold, cough, sore throat and even asthma.
  • This tea decoction is also used to treat indigestion and abdominal pain

  • 3 Stalks Rasna , roots and leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black pepper powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin powder (Jeera)
  • 1 teaspoon Honey
  • 2 cups Water

How to make Health Benefits of Rasna (Alpinia Galanga) - Ayurvedic Medicinal Plant

  1. To begin making Rasna, Ayurvedic Medicinal Plant Tea Recipe in a saucepan add all the ingredients ,the rasna roots, washed and chopped, the rasna leaves torn into bits and water.

  2. Boil for about 15 minutes till the water reduces to half and forms a strong rasna tea decoction. 

  3. Stir in the the black pepper powder and cumin powder and give it another brisk boil.

  4. Once combined and infused well, strain the rasna tea and discard the herbs and spices.

  5. Add honey if you like before serving.
