Juice isn’t a complicated or new concept for any one of us. We’ve probably been drinking good old juice long before it became a jargonized, complex food trend. Raw, cold-pressed, unpasteurized, vegan, gluten-free, pulpy – it’s time to cut the complexity and get down to juicing, plain and simple.
It’s probably one of the easiest ways to increase your fruit and vegetable intake, through a healthy, refreshing way. Of course, when we say juice we don’t mean the sugar, preservative and chemical-loaded tetra packs that line your supermarket shelves. We mean the freshly pressed, homemade variety that gives you so much control over what you add to it, boosting nutritive value up the way you want to.
In this first part on juicing we will look at a few simple reasons why you should consider including juice in your daily diet, and how you can simplify it:
- Boost of nutrition into your diet: Drinking your veggies is much easier than eating them, especially those carrots and greens that many of us don’t like. Freshly squeezed juice has the capacity to transfer all the same health benefits of eating your veggies.
- Freshest food source of vitamins: Juicing if done right, gives you fresh, raw and live nutrition, and the quickest rate of absorption, reducing your need to take external supplements to nil.
- Quick absorption of nutrients: Juicing essentially separates the fibrous pulp from the liquid, which seamlessly enters the bloodstream, allowing your body to quickly and easily absorb the nutritive value. Fresh juices are vitamin rich, and much easier for our bodies to digest in liquid form.
- More nutrients than packaged variants: In order to extend the shelf-life of packaged juice, they are heated to pasteurize them. This process kills almost all the nutritive value. Aside from this processing, additives like preservatives, color, and added sugars are present in packaged variants of juice.
Here’s how you can organize your daily juicing:
- Invest in an affordable but sturdy juicer. While some softer fruit and veg can be juiced by hand, a juicer helps get the most out of any raw material.
- Buy fresh fruit and vegetables, based on the recipes you use. Do not use stale produce.
- Prepare your fruits and veggies by washing them clean, peeling, coring and de-seeding where needed.
- Work out interesting flavor combinations that do not combat each other in terms of nutritive value.
- Reuse pulp by juicing it a second time, and then adding it to other food.
Depending on what you use to make your daily juice, some well-known benefits of juicing include increased vitality and energy, healthy skin, bone strength, weight loss, and detoxification of your system. In the next part, we will see some benefits of specific varieties of juice and how you can incorporate them into your diet.
